Most law firm owners work well together and share profits equitably and amicably. However, on occasion a law firm owner may file suit against other owner(s) for their breach of fiduciary duties and/or for causing economic loss to another law firm owner(s). This situation may require a valuation of the law firm. Bill is a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) and has valued numerous law firms in conjunction with his performance as an expert witness.

Bill also serves as an expert witness for other law firm financial issues.

Valuing a Partner’s Goodwill for a Divorce Proceeding

Determining the “market replacement compensation” for a specific law firm equity partner can be difficult and complicated. It would be extremely rare for a perfect source of comparable compensation to exist for that purpose. Different states have adopted different approaches to this issue. The process requires the use of both: a) a valid benchmarking source(s); and b) the selection of appropriate data from such source(s) that is comparable to the individual under review. Both are necessary to accurately determine an estimate of a particular individual’s “market replacement compensation”. Bill has experience making this calculation in compliance with several state case law precedents.
